Mentoring a New Mason - Free starter

Help a new Mason understand his next visit and find the right people for his questions.

First step: Make the next visit easy: agree where to meet and explain what to expect.

Make his next visit easier

A new Mason may not know which entrance to use, whom to sit with, or what he is expected to do. Start there.

1. Introduce your help

Say you can explain everyday lodge life and help him find answers.

2. Check the next visit

Confirm the date, arrival time, entrance, dress, and meal arrangements.

3. Meet him at the door

Introduce two or three Brothers and stay available.

4. Ask what would help

Let his questions guide the conversation. You do not have to deliver a lecture.

Brother, I can meet you at the entrance before the next meeting and introduce you around. What would make the evening easier for you?

The lodge's appointed instructor handles its required instruction. Use current authorized guidance and respect restrictions on degree material.

Four conversations for the first month

This is a starting plan, not a required timetable. Adapt it with him and the lodge's instructor.

1. Before the next visit

Check practical details. Ask what he already understands and what feels uncertain. Agree how to contact one another.

2. After a meeting

Ask what made sense and what raised questions. Explain ordinary routines. Check answers you do not know.

3. Finding his place

Ask what interests him. Introduce someone who shares that interest. Offer a small, optional way to participate without assigning him a job.

4. Check whether this is useful

Ask what help he still wants. Continue, change the arrangement, or help him connect with another mentor.

What has been clear so far, and what would you like someone to explain?

Missed meetings are a reason to check in kindly, not a reason to lecture or make him defend his priorities.
